Movie Review - The Wolverine (Hugh Jackman)

The Wolverine (12A)

Bless Hugh Jackman. Its his sixth outing as the mutton-chopped, muscle-popping mutant and you can understand the Oscar-nominated actor is keen as mustard to bring a little more depth to the role.

He spent 12 years earnestly producing this X-Men spin-off which, as every Marvel fanboy knows, is based on the 1980s Samurai mini series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller (who also wrote The Dark Knight Returns).
For the rest of you, this is the one where Wolverine goes to Japan to say goodbye to an old friend, who is actually scheming to get his mitts on the genetic secret of the Wolverines superhuman self-healing powers.

There are fights, there are special effects, there are more ninjas than sense, theres glorious rolling acres of Jackman torso and there is an awesome fight atop a speeding 300mph bullet train. But yet it somehow manages to be pretty much a yawn fest.

This Wolverine is more interior, more restrained a little darker, Jackman has said of a film where Wolverine spends a good 40 minutes stumbling around in a beard attempting to look vulnerable (a tall task when you look like a small fortress built from 100 per cent prime beef), being tortured by nightmares about his dead beloved (Famke Janssen in a floatie nightie) and longing to join her. When will folk learn that dark doesnt necessarily mean profound just profoundly dull?

Director James Walk The Line Mangold sucks Jackmans screen presence of its natural expansive charisma. Wheres the warmth? The heart? Or any sense of wit? A multimillion dollar pile of tedium.

Amala Paul teams up with Dhanush

Amala Paul was supposed to do 3 with Dhanush, but opted out of it due to date issues. And now, the news is that the two will finally team up for a project that will be directed by cameraman Velraj.

Amala says, "I felt very sad that despite having agreed to do 3 with Dhanush, I had to opt out of the film later. So, it makes me doubly happy that I'm going to be working with the same team again. While Dhanush will be the hero, Anirudh will compose the music for this one as well. And, cinematographer Velraj will be directing the film."

The actress says she will start shooting for the film from August 20. Talking about her character, she says, "I play a lovable Chennai girl, someone who's very rational. It will be a family entertainer."

Worlds most typecast actor dies aged 85

Jagdish Raj, an actor who held a world record after playing a policeman 144 times on screen, has died.

The Bollywood legend was technically the most typecast actor ever, famous for playing a police detective in films such as Mazdoor and Imaan Dharam.

He in fact held the Guinness World Record for the dubious honour, which was achieved during a 21 year career.

Rajs passed away after suffering respiratory arrest, with his death being reported to the Times of India by his son-in-law.

According to Rakesh Malhorta, Raj had been in and out of hospital for the past two years and had respiratory problems.

His many film credits included Gopichand Jasoos, Silsila, Aaina and Besharam, with his only non-policeman roles coming in 1985's Salma as a doctor along with two appearances as a judge.

Raj was born in 1928 and retired from acting in 1992. He is survived by daughters Roopa Malhotra and Anita Raj, the latter of whom is also a Bollywood actor.

06.10.2011- My Week with Marilyn Trailer

Michelle Williams' performance looks amazing, as do the costumes and locations. I can't wait to see the full film when it hits cinemas on November 18th.

Are you looking forward to seeing My Week with Marilyn?

17.05.2011- Film Review: New York, I Love You

I'd been eagerly anticipating the release of New York, I Love You since seeing its predecessor, Paris, Je T'aime a few years ago. After a long wait for the DVD release, I finally got round to watching the film, which encompasses a series of shorter stories set against the bustling backdrop of New York City. Although it could be argued that a film made entirely of shorts makes it harder to engage with the characters and the stories being told, the beauty of New York, I Love You lies in the continuity which arises from setting each story in the same place; the film is, after all, as much about the relationships the characters have with New York as it is about the relationships which they have with each other. Some of the characters also make repeat appearances in other stories, which is a cohesive lovely touch. My favourite story of the entire film was written and directed by Joshua Marston, and captures beautifully the endearing relationship between elderly couple Abe (Eli Wallach) and Mitzie (Cloris Leachman) as they take a walk to the beach. Another standout short was the one created by Natalie Portman, who also stars in another segment directed by Mira Nair. Portman's film focuses on the relationship between a father (Carlos Acosta) and his daughter, highlighting the issue of family separation and the prejudices faced by single fathers. I won't spoil the end, but suffice it to say it is very touching.

One of the more abstract segments was written by the late Anthony Minghella and directed by Shekhar Kapur. Starring Julie Christie, John Hurt and Shia LaBeouf, the piece is beautifully shot and acted, particularly by Christie, who plays a woman who can't help but reminisce about the past. Featuring a stark colour palette, the cinematography perfectly captures the mood of the piece, even if the narrative itself is a little ambiguous. I also really enjoyed some of the funnier shorts, particularly Shunji Iwai's, featuring Orlando Boom and Christina Ricci, which muses upon our interaction (or lack of interaction) in a world saturated with technology.

Overall, I really enjoyed New York, I Love You. If you've visited the city like I have, chances are you'll find the film even more endearing (and, if you're as much of a geek as I am, you'll probably try and play 'spot the location' as you watch.) Even if you haven't been to New York, you're bound to identify with the stories and the characters as they navigate their way through relationships and love in the Empire State. Put simply, New York, I Love You offers a series of portraits which are as diverse, entertaining and charming as the city itself,  presents a series of stories in which nothing is as it seems and captures the beauty of everyday life and love in New York City.

Have you seen New York, I Love You? If so, what did you think?

11.10.2010- Harry Potter and the magical red carpet

Tonight here in London it was the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One. I've already written about how excited I am for the release of the film next Friday, and, judging by the thousands of fans who braved the cold and wet in Leicester Square this evening, I'm not the only one. A lot of pictures are still being posted or are yet to come in, but here's a glimpse of my favourite looks from the red carpet so far:

Emma Watson, looking lovely in head to toe black. The crop is really growing on me.
Clémence Poésy, one of my many style crushes, looking effortlessly chic in navy lace. I also adore her clutch bag!
J.K Rowling in the third lace gown of the evening. Spotting a trend?
Bonnie Wright, keeping things minimal in black. I do love the red lipstick.
Rebecca Ferguson, the only X-Factor contestant who will ever feature on this blog (safe to say I am finding the whole show more than tedious!) I love her voice, her attitude and her style, and here she looks every inch the star. Team Rebecca.
Helena Bonham Carter, in what I think is a Vivienne Westwood gown. I do love her quirky style.

What do you think of the red carpet looks from tonight's premiere? Any that stand out for you?

16.10.2010- Black Swan

Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman and directed by Darren Aronofsky isn't released here in the U.K until February next year (which I know seems an insanely long time away), but, by the look of these beautifully designed teaser posters, it will be well worth the wait:

The film centres upon Portman's character, Nina, who is competing for the lead role in a New York production of Swan Lake with another dancer, Lilly (played by Mila Kunis). On a visual level, the film looks as if it has been beautifully shot, as the storyline delves into the psychology of one of the most iconic storylines of the traditional ballet repertoire. I can't wait to see the dance sequences (Portman and Kunis received ballet training in preparation for playing their respective roles), and the costumes in particular. I'm sure you're looking forward to the film as much as I am, but just in case you haven't seen the trailer yet, here it is:

What do you think? Are you looking forward to seeing Black Swan? What other films are you excited about seeing over the coming months?

13.10.2010- Never Let Me Go

Today saw both the press conference and premiere at the London Film Festival for Never Let Me Go, which stars Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield. The film, based upon Kazuro Ishiguro's novel of the same name, centres around a dystopian English boarding school where things aren't all that they appear. The trailer appears quite dark, so I can't say I'll be rushing out to see the film when it's released, as I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat to be shamefully honest! But, having said that, I'm more than happy to admire the gorgeous outfits that Keira and Carey wore to today's Never Let Me Go events:

At the Press Conference: Carey wearing Proenza Schouler and Keira in Rodarte.
At the Premiere: Carey wearing Vionnet and Keira wearing Chanel Couture. All sourced via Red Carpet Fashion Awards.
Pretty impressive, no? But then I suppose it helps if you've got all the design houses in the world throwing dresses at you (and Karl Lagerfeld on speed-dial.) If the film is BAFTA nominated, which I'm fairly sure it will be, I can't wait to see what Carey and Keira pull out of the bag for awards season. They certainly make a very stylish team on the red carpet!

What do you think of Carey and Keira's looks? Which is your favourite? And will you be seeing Never Let Me Go?

11.10.2010- Michelle does Marilyn

You might have seen this over the weekend- the first official publicity picture of Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. Williams is portraying Monroe in My Week with Marylin, a film which is set to recall the making of The Prince and the Showgirl, and is based upon the memoirs of Colin Clark, an assistant on the 1957 production. The film also stars Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier, Eddie Redmayne as Colin Clark and Judi Dench as Dame Sybil Thorndike. The supporting cast includes Dominic Cooper, Zoe Wanamaker, Simon Russell Beale and Emma Watson, in her first role since graduating from Harry Potter. The premise of the film sounds brilliant, and the cast is second to none. I'm already thinking that there may be some Oscars in the pipeline, as we all know that Michelle is a phenomenal actress. And, if this promotional image of her in full costume, hair and makeup as Marylin is anything to go by, I'd say that the producers could have chosen no-one better to play one of the most beloved cinema icons of all time:

Credit: The Weinstein Company
Talking of Marilyn, a new book called Marylin, August 1953: The Lost LOOK Photos, compiled by Brian Wallis features over one hundred previously unseen images of Monroe from 1953, taken when she was filming River of No Return. The book is released at the end of the month and, if this glimpse is anything to go by, I'd say it's definitely worth picking up:

Not only does the book showcase more of Marilyn's classic style, but it also offers a really intimate portrait of her in her element, as captured by John Vachon. Beautiful, no?

What do you think of Michelle Williams as Marilyn? Are you looking forward to seeing My Week with Marilyn? And will you be buying the book?
