27.11.2011- Sunday Style Spotlight #9: Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst has long been a fashion inspiration of mine. I've loved watching her films (Marie Antoinette is one of my all-time favourites), and, after randomly bumping into her in the shoe department of Selfridges a few years ago, I've been an avid follower of her style. Whilst I'm yet to catch her performance in Melancholia, it was great to see Kirsten on the red carpet again during the promotion of the film over the summer, wearing stunning dresses by Chanel, ChloƩ and Rodarte. If I had to summarise her look in one word, I'd probably choose romantic- pretty details, classic shapes and a touch of whimsy all come together to create a much-coveted signature style:
My interpretation of Kirsten's style is all about taking classic pieces and adding to them- this shirt from Miss Selfridge is a perfect wardrobe staple with an added element of sparkle thanks to the embellished collar. The same goes for the Oasis skirt- the lace overlay captures the sense of romance which makes Kirsten's look so recognisable. The embellished touches on this Topshop dress evoke a couture feel at a fraction of the price, and I think these shoes from Zara could be mistaken for a Miu Miu pair. Finally, these earrings from Whistles are both simple and cute, capturing the essence of Kirsten's approach to fashion.

12.02.2011- Queen Kirsten

I've fallen in love with Kirsten Dunst all over again since seeing her in Marie Antoinette, a screening of which I was invited to at the Most Wanted Fashion Revolution Party, hosted by the lovely people over at vouchercodes.co.uk. (I will get round to posting about the event soon, I promise!) A few years ago my friends and I bumped into Kirsten in Selfridges' shoe department; she was so sweet, and more than happy to have a picture with us (alas a rather scary security man promptly told us off for taking photos in the store!) Anyway, I'm mentioning all of this because Kirsten is the model for the Band of Outsiders Spring 2011 Lookbook:

A tea party with a cuddly elephant? Don't mind if I do! Looking through these sun-drenched pictures makes me more eager for the warmer weather than ever, and I love the sense of character that comes across throughout. And it goes without saying that the styling is perfect. I'm off to dig out my Polaroid camera.

What do you think of Kirsten for Band of Outsiders? Have you seen Marie Antoinette? And if so, what did you think?

11.08.2010- Tricky Trend: The Midi

Christina Hendricks as Joan Holloway in Mad Men.
One of my best friends and I were traipsing around Oxford Street's enormous branch of TOPSHOP at the start of the week, trying to pick up some autumn inspiration. The conversation steered to the midi- next season's most desirable skirt length, which I think will be pretty tricky to pull off without looking like you've raided your mum's wardrobe. The midi is causing such a revolution at the moment because for the first time in what feels like ages, high fashion (and, thanks to Mad Men, television) is embracing the fuller figure. Indeed, the designer behind 'midi mania', Marc Jacobs, recently announced plans to produce his designs in plus sizes, making him the first contemporary designer to cater for, rather than shun the fuller figured customer. Jacobs' most recent collection for Louis Vuitton was a celebration of curvaceous proportions, cinched in waists and the 1950's silhouette:

'And God created Woman', Louis Vuitton Fall 2010.

For me, the key to the midi will be how to wear it and still keep it youthful. Although I love the shape, it does create a very mature look, which will be tricky to master without looking like you've been caught playing dress-up. With this in mind, we turn again to Marc Jacobs and his own Fall 2010 collection:

Marc Jacobs Fall 2010.

Jacobs here keeps the midi feeling young by styling with ankle socks, basic tops, and unkempt hair, in contrast to the chic, swept back ponytails at Louis Vuitton. Bright young things Kirsten Dunst and Alexa Chung also demonstrated how to wear the midi at the opening of the Louis Vuitton Maison in London back in May:

Alexa's ankle tie espadrilles and sequin blouse keep her ensemble looking fresh, and Kirsten's hair really pops against the dark blue of her dress. If like me you are a bit reluctant to embrace the midi, the best thing to do is, as always, try before you buy. You never know, you might just find the perfect shape for you. I've just spotted this one over at MANGO which I'll be looking for when I'm next shopping:

What do you think of the midi? Will you be investing in one? How will you wear it? Or will you be avoiding it at all costs?

30.06.2010- Fashion Moment: Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst was snapped out and about in New York last weekend, wearing a dress from Miu Miu's Spring Summer 2010 collection. I've always admired Kirsten's style, and a good few years ago now my friends and I met her by sheer chance in Selfridges shoe department! I think she looks great here, the frock is divine anyway but I love the way she's dressed it down for the street with a pair of black flats and sunglasses. Her haircut also works really well with this look.

What do you think of Kirsten's street style? Does she carry off the Miu Miu dress?

04.05.2010- MET Ball 2010

Here are my picks of last night's Costume Institute Gala Red Carpet:

Alexa Chung in Phillip Lim. I adore this look on Alexa, the bow detail really reminds me of a scene from Coco Before Chanel (if you've seen the film you probably know what I'm talking about.) Hair and makeup are styled to perfection, she looks effortlessly chic and really at ease here. Love!

Diane Kruger in Calvin Klein, clean, sophisticated and elegant, I really love her makeup here as well.

Chanel Iman in Michael Kors. I love the fact that Chanel chose to wear a jumpsuit rather than a gown, she looks radiant.

Anne Hathaway in Valentino, looking every inch the fairy tale princess.

Nicole Richie in Marc Jacobs, perfectly co-ordinated.

Kate Bosworth in Valentino, love the Jean Harlow-esque hairstyle, and the beaded detailing on the gown.

Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte for GAP; I am utterly in love with this dress.

Who stood out for you? Any I've missed? And who disappointed you?
