27.08.2010- Alexa for L'Officiel

Alexa Chung is the star of the August issue of Paris magazine L'Officiel, in an editorial which features a distinct 1960's flavour:

There is a really cinematic feel to this shoot, which I love, and the vintage inspired styling is really cute, especially with the Peter-Pan collars and gorgeous pea coat. I also love the way the hazy quality of light makes the images look like they belong in a old photo album and brings a really mellow quality to the composition of the shots.

I love the combination of pale pastels with silver, which gives the whole collection a modern feel whilst retaining some antique detailing through integration of delicate lace, ruffles and embellishment. The dresses as standalone pieces are romantic and feminine, but when styled as they have been here with silver tights and space-age footwear, they take on a simultaneously tough yet ethereal dimension.

Armani Privé

 

Beautifully simple and understated, yet every bit as attentive to detail as the Chanel collection. Sophisticated, subtle and effortlessly elegant.

Christian Dior

 

 

 

John Galliano's Couture presentations for Dior are always the most theatrical of all of the shows, which is why I think I look forward to them the most. I love the historical feel that this collection has; the models look like they belong in a painting. For Galliano, Couture is not just about painstakingly creating a beautiful dress; he constructs a world and aesthetic in which his creations can live and breathe, filling the imagination and evoking a bygone era of decadence which we long to escape to. For me Galliano's work is what Couture is all about, escapism, nostalgia and fairy-tale magic.

22.07.2009- Coco Before Chanel

'Coco Avant Chanel' (Coco Before Chanel) is released here in the UK next Friday and it looks like a must see. Audrey Tautou stars as Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel who established the iconic fashion house which still bears her name, revolutionising contemporary womenswear through her creation of the little black dress. Her influence is unavoidable in 21st century fashion and her establishment of Chanel cosmetics and fragrances (Chanel no. 5 being Coco's signature scent) paved the way for many design houses to follow in her footsteps throughout the 20th century.

The costumes featured in the film are sure to provide inspiration for many a winter wardrobe, and through replicating Chanel's design ingenuity on screen, costume designer Catherine Leterrier proves how something as simple as tying a ribbon in a bow around the neck of a white shirt can become timeless.
