26.01.2011- Swan Song

In the unlikely event that Black Swan mania has passed you by (alas, a suddenly busy week has stopped me from seeing it yet), this beautiful editorial from Vogue Russia more than confirms that ballet is certainly having something of a fashion moment:

Although the Black Swan references are perhaps a tad too obvious with the monochrome styling, I really like the way that this editorial imitates a 'behind the scenes' feel and the opulence of the theatre is breathtaking. Also, in the midst of my mountain of dissertation research, I recently watched Anthony Dowell's beautiful Royal Ballet production of Swan Lake on DVD, and until the beginning of April, it is being staged again at Covent Garden's Royal Opera House. Certainly a must-see if you've been converted by Black Swan and are now a bit of a ballet nut (and, if you don't mind a restricted view, tickets are available for as little as £10). Here's the trailer:

It really is a wonderful production.

What do you think of this editorial? Have you seen Black Swan yet? If so what did you make of it?

16.10.2010- Black Swan

Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman and directed by Darren Aronofsky isn't released here in the U.K until February next year (which I know seems an insanely long time away), but, by the look of these beautifully designed teaser posters, it will be well worth the wait:

The film centres upon Portman's character, Nina, who is competing for the lead role in a New York production of Swan Lake with another dancer, Lilly (played by Mila Kunis). On a visual level, the film looks as if it has been beautifully shot, as the storyline delves into the psychology of one of the most iconic storylines of the traditional ballet repertoire. I can't wait to see the dance sequences (Portman and Kunis received ballet training in preparation for playing their respective roles), and the costumes in particular. I'm sure you're looking forward to the film as much as I am, but just in case you haven't seen the trailer yet, here it is:

What do you think? Are you looking forward to seeing Black Swan? What other films are you excited about seeing over the coming months?

29.08.2010- Golden touch...

The Victoria and Albert Museum's major exhibition for the autumn, Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballet Russes, showcases the work and imagination of artistic director Serge Diaghilev and the genesis of the radical Ballet Russes. Diaghilev's work with the company transformed the face of early 20th century culture through collaboration with artists including Coco Chanel, Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, in the development of an aesthetic which married art, music and dance to create a spectacular brand of total theatre. Diaghilev's vision combined with Vaslav Nijinsky's bold choreography of an original ballet repertoire (including Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring) saw the Ballet Russes become one of the most influential theatre companies of the twentieth century, and their legacy still influences a panoply of contemporary culture. The exhibition, which opens at the V&A South Kensington on the 25th September and runs until the 9th January 2011, features over three hundred objects, including original costumes, set designs and props, all of which tell the story of a ballet company and visionary who together transformed the face of modern dance, fashion and art.

In celebration of the launch of the exhibition, the V&A shop have also launched a special range of tie-in merchandise, including this gorgeous scarf designed by Erdem, featuring the original costume designs of Léon Bakst for the Ballet Russes:

At £185, it is rather pricey, but it is certainly a beautiful keepsake of the exhibition. On the other hand, these gorgeous prints are a bit more within my price range, and will look great in hanging up in my room. I can't wait to get down to the V&A when the exhibition opens, it looks as though it's going to be unmissable (and invaluable for my dissertation research!)

To find out more about the exhibition, visit www.vam.ac.uk.

What do you think? Will you be paying a visit? Or perhaps splashing out on the Erdem scarf?

13.05.2010- Vintage Sasha

Sasha Pivovarova for Vogue China from November 2005:

Sasha is one of my favourite models, I love the simplicity of this editorial, the ballet theme and the way it has been so starkly lit. Also, how amazing do her eyes look in the last shot?
