21.08.2011- Sunday Style Spotlight #1: Karen Gillan

New feature alert! I've had this idea floating around my brain since the New Year (proactive, I know!) but it's taken me this long to get it down on paper (or Blogger, if you like). Anyway, better late than never, here is the first of what I'm hoping will become a regular post for your Sundays- essentially casting an admiring eye over the style of some of my current fashion favourites. Hope you enjoy!

Now, if you're anything like me (a bit of a nerd) then you'll be eagerly anticipating the arrival of the second half of the present series of Doctor Who on television next weekend. After a few massively confusing episodes at the opening of the series (too much for my tiny mind to handle!), I'm looking forward to seeing the direction the second half takes, and cannot wait for the return of James Corden as Craig. So, with this in mind, what better way to welcome back the Doctor than by celebrating the style of his most fashionable companion to date- Amy Pond, alias Karen Gillan.

I've admired Karen's style since she began making appearances when the series was re-launched last year. She's got such unique style and isn't afraid to embrace a bold fashion choice, but her look is still really accessible and easily replicated on the high street.

Think one-off vintage dresses, oversize boyfriend jackets, toughened up footwear and statement accessories and you're there. Karen is set to make even more of a fashion statement over the coming weeks, as she stars in the BBC Four drama We'll Take Manhattan, playing iconic 60's model Jean 'The Shrimp' Shrimpton. I can't wait to see it, and am sure the costumes will be amazing.

Are you a fan of Karen's style? And are you looking forward to the return of Doctor Who?

24.08.2010- Best Dressed at V

The annual V Festival took place last weekend at two sites in the UK: Hylands Park in Chelmsford and Weston Park in Staffordshire, and acts performing this year included Kings of Leon, Florence and the Machine and Kasabian. As if more proof was needed that today's music festivals are as much about who is wearing what as who is headlining, vogue.co.uk was on site in Chelmsford, snapping the best dressed attendees, including:

Alexa Chung, in lace up wellies, denim cut-offs, Kurt Cobain tee and Aran cardigan.

Drew Barrymore, looking very bohemian with Justin Long.

Florence Welch, carrying a Mulberry bag.

Gemma Arterton.

Karen Gillan.

If you're feeling inspired by the outfits of either Alexa or Florence in particular, get yourself down to Topshop. They've got a gorgeous Knitted Aran Cardigan which is almost identical to Alexa's and a Mustard Short Sleeve Shirt which I'm pretty sure is the very same as Florence's.

£48, Topshop.
£38, Topshop.
To see the best of the rest from V Festival, visit vogue.co.uk. What are your thoughts? Also, is it me, or have Topshop really hiked up their prices for Autumn/Winter? Thank goodness for student discount!

30.06.2010- Style Radar: Karen Gillan

I've loved watching the latest series of Doctor Who, which has just ended its run over here. Each of the episodes was really well made and extremely well written; whoever came up with the idea of The Doctor moving in with James Corden in The Lodger is a genius, and the episode entitled Vincent and the Doctor, written by Richard Curtis is probably my favourite of the series (with the exception of the A-MA-ZING series finale.) Matt Smith and Karen Gillan in the lead roles of The Doctor and Amy Pond respectively have brought a youthful exuberance to the show, and the dynamic of having Rory (Arthur Darvill), Amy's boyfriend/fiancé/husband as a second companion brings the programme a really welcome humour. Off-screen, Karen Gillan has been proving her fashion credentials both on and off the red carpet, and I'm seriously adoring her style!

At the Sex and the City 2 London Premiere, in Louis Vuitton.

In Diane von Furstenberg at the BAFTA Craft Awards.

With Matt Smith at a Doctor Who screening in New York, wearing a gorgeous aubergine maxi dress.

New York promo tour again, in a black DKNY Jumpsuit. Love the accessories, especially the pastel green scarf.

Is that a Mulberry Alexa I spy? A girl after my own heart!

It seems I'm not the only fan of Karen, as she was recently featured in UK InStyle, sporting a pair of Miu Miu trousers (serious love) and killer Rupert Sanderson sandals:

I'm really excited to see how Karen's style evolves; she really knows her fashion, which is no surprise really as she was a model before she moved into acting. And Amy Pond is probably my favourite companion ever, mainly because of this:

What do you think of Karen's style? And who else is on your style radar?

18.06.2010- Blazin' a trail...

The humble blazer has become something of a wardrobe staple over recent years, and I for one can't get enough of them. A blazer is versatile, smart and practical- perfect for those overcast days where it's a bit too chilly to leave home without layering up. The blazer has also become a fast favourite on the red-carpet and in the wardrobes of this lovely lot:

I'm currently lusting after this trio:

Shawl Collar Tux Blazer, Topshop, £65

Beige Amy Jacket, Oasis, £60

Free People Floral Long Sleeve Blazer, Urban Outfitters, £49.99

So what do you think? Will you be investing in a new blazer for the summer?
